Where to Try a Bifana in Lisbon

Where to Try a Bifana in Lisbon

A bifana is one of Portugal’s most classic snacks.
It is a warm pork sandwich made with thin slices of pork cooked in a sauce with garlic, bay leaf, white wine or beer, and a bit of spice.

It is usually served in a small bread roll. The sauce soaks into the bread and gives the sandwich most of its flavour. In Lisbon, people often add mustard or piri-piri, but you can also eat it plain.

It is the kind of food you order at the counter, often with a beer, when you want something quick.

Here are 4 good places to try a bifana in Lisbon:

O Trevo
A classic stop in Chiado, right on Praça Luís de Camões. It became even more famous after Anthony Bourdain visited. Good option if you are around Chiado, Bairro Alto or Cais do Sodré.

Bifanas do Afonso
Probably the most popular bifana in Lisbon right now. The original spot is on Rua da Madalena, and there are usually long queues.

tip: many people do not know that Bifanas do Afonso are also served at Lisbon Art Stay, on Rua dos Sapateiros 158. It is not far from the original place, and it can be an easier option if the main queue is too long.

Triângulo da Ribeira
A good quick stop near Cais do Sodré and the riverside. Useful if you are around Time Out Market, Corpo Santo or the train station and want something fast.

Parreirinha do Chile
This is my personal choice. The bifanas are delicious, it feels more local, and normally you do not have to wait in a big line.
