One of the messages I receive quite often is: “Do you know a good driver for day trips from Lisbon?”
For places like Cascais or Évora, public transport can work perfectly well. But if you want to combine several places, make stops along the way and use your time better, a private driver can make a big difference.
Here are some routes where I would consider it:
1️⃣ Sintra + Cabo da Roca + Cascais
Probably the classic combination.
Visit the palaces and gardens of Sintra, continue to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and finish by the coast in Cascais.
Sintra alone is easy by train, but combining all three is much easier with your own transport.
2️⃣ Fátima + Nazaré + Óbidos
Three very different places in one day.
Fátima is one of the world’s major Catholic pilgrimage sites, Nazaré is known for its fishing traditions and giant waves, and Óbidos is a beautiful medieval walled town.
3️⃣ Arrábida + Sesimbra + Azeitão
One of my favourite routes close to Lisbon.
Drive through Serra da Arrábida, stop at viewpoints, have lunch in Sesimbra and continue to Azeitão for local food or a wine tasting.
Here, the road and the stops are part of the experience.
4️⃣ Tomar + Almourol
A great option if you enjoy Portuguese history.
Tomar has a strong connection with the Knights Templar and the Order of Christ, while Almourol Castle sits on a small island in the Tagus River.
5️⃣ Évora + Monsaraz
Évora is easy to visit by train, but having a driver allows you to continue deeper into the Alentejo.
After Évora, you can visit Monsaraz, a small fortified village overlooking the Alqueva and the Alentejo landscape.
🚗 When is a driver worth it?
For me, it comes down to time, comfort and flexibility.
You can leave directly from your accommodation, avoid changing buses or trains, stay longer somewhere you like and make extra stops along the way.
You definitely don’t need a driver for every day trip. But for routes like these, it can make the day much easier.
If you are looking for a private driver or day tour from Lisbon, send me a DM. I have someone I regularly recommend to my guests.
