When people think about day trips from Lisbon, they usually think of Sintra or Cascais.
But if you're looking for a day of long sandy beaches, clear water and plenty of space to relax, I highly recommend Tróia.
Located on a peninsula just across the River Sado from Setúbal, Tróia is known for its 18 kilometres of sandy beaches, calm sea and beautiful views over the Arrábida Natural Park.
Some of my best summer days have been spent here.
🚆 How to Get There Without a Car
It's perfectly possible to visit Tróia using public transport.
Take a Fertagus train from Lisbon (for example, Entrecampos) to Setúbal. From the station, you can either walk for around 15 minutes or take a local bus to the ferry terminal.
From there, take the Atlantic Ferries catamaran to Tróia. The crossing takes about 15 minutes, and a return ticket currently costs €9.30 per person.
🌊 Why I Like Tróia
What I enjoy most is the feeling of space.
Even in summer, it's easy to find a quiet spot on the beach. The sand seems endless, the sea is usually calm, and on clear days you can look across the water to the Arrábida Natural Park.
🏛️ If You Have Extra Time
Besides the beach, Tróia is also home to the Roman Ruins of Tróia, one of the largest Roman fish-salting complexes ever discovered on the Iberian Peninsula, a reminder that this peninsula was an important industrial centre almost 2,000 years ago.
Before Heading Back
If you have time, stop in Setúbal for dinner.
