Tomar is a small town in central Portugal, about 1.5 hours from Lisbon. It was founded in the 12th century by the Knights Templar, and their mark is still all over the place, from the hilltop castle to the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that took centuries to build.
Beyond the history, it's a lovely town to wander around, and I highly recommend it for a day trip.

Tomar’s #1 landmark is the Convent of Christ, one of Portugal’s most fascinating monuments. Built in the 12th century, this former Templar stronghold is home to the Charola, an octagonal chapel inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
Aqueduct of Pegões: A Templar Engineering Feat:
Built in the 16th century to supply water to the Convent of Christ, the Aqueduct of Pegões stretches over 6 km with arches as high as 30 meters.
Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes: Tomar’s Green Sanctuary
Right next to the convent, this vast park was once a strategic and peaceful retreat for the Templars.
Mouchão Park & the Waterwheel:
Located in the city center, this riverside park along the Nabão River is the perfect place to relax. Its wooden waterwheel, a replica of the original hydraulic wheels used to power mills in the past, is a charming highlight.
