This Olive Tree in the Algarve Is Older Than Portugal

In Pedras d'El Rei, you can find an olive tree estimated to be over 2,200 years old, making it one of the oldest living trees in Portugal.
To put that into perspective, this tree was already growing more than 1,300 years before Portugal became a kingdom in 1143.
Its enormous, twisted trunk is hollow inside, with a cavity around 1.3 metres wide. Despite its age, the tree is still alive.

In 1984, it was officially classified as a Tree of Public Interest.
Where to find it: Pedras d'El Rei, near Santa Luzia and Tavira. The tree is located inside the tourist village, close to the reception, and visitors can see it for free.
It's a small stop, but an interesting piece of Portugal's natural history.
