THIS LISBON SHOP HAS BEEN MAKING CANDLES SINCE 1789

Just a short walk from Praça Luís de Camões, there is a small shop that has been making and selling candles for more than 230 years.
It’s called Caza das Vellas Loreto, and it has stayed in the same location and in the same family since 1789.
When it opened, Lisbon had no electric street lighting. The shop was required to keep two torches burning outside at night to help light the street.

Today, candles are still made by hand in the workshop behind the shop. Inside, wooden cabinets display candles in different colours, shapes and scents, including some shaped like fruit.

If you’re walking around Chiado, stop by. It’s a chance to visit one of Lisbon’s oldest businesses and bring home something made here.

📍 Rua do Loreto 53–55, Lisbon.
