Near Tomar, in central Portugal, you'll find one of the country's most impressive aqueducts: Aqueduto dos Pegões Altos.
Construction began in 1593, during the reign of King Filipe I, to bring water from four natural springs to the famous Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The aqueduct stretches for around 6 km and has 180 stone arches. In the Pegões valley, the arches are built on two levels, reaching a height of 30 metres.
The project took more than 25 years to complete and is considered one of Portugal's great engineering works of the 17th century.
You can visit the aqueduct just outside Tomar, making it a good stop if you're visiting the Convent of Christ. Access to the top is currently closed for safety reasons, but you can still admire the structure from the surrounding area.
Have you visited Tomar or the Convent of Christ?
