Lisbon is easy to enjoy, but a few small things can make your trip much smoother.
From the airport to the city centre
Lisbon Airport is close to the centre.You can take the metro from the airport. If you prefer Uber or Bolt, the trip to the city centre is usually around €10 to €15, depending on traffic and demand.
Don’t rely too much on Google Maps walking times
Lisbon has hills, stairs and cobblestones.A “5-minute walk” can feel very different with luggage, heat or rain. Always check the elevation, not only the distance.
Going to Sintra and Cascais is easy
For Sintra, take the train from Rossio Station.For Cascais, take the train from Cais do Sodré.You don’t need to book in advance. Just buy the ticket at the station.
Always double check opening hours
Some museums and monuments have been closed or partially closed for renovation works.
Before going somewhere, always check the official website.
Tap water is good to drink
Tap water in Lisbon is safe to drink.
Bring a reusable bottle, especially in summer.
Restaurant hours
Many local restaurants serve lunch until around 14:30 or 15:00.
Dinner usually starts around 19:00 and many kitchens close around 22:00 or 22:30.
Also, many traditional restaurants close on Sunday or Monday, so check before going.
Accessibility
Lisbon is not the easiest city for people with mobility issues.
There are hills, stairs and old pavements. Some metro stations also have limited accessibility, so check the metro map and lift status before travelling.
Pickpockets
Lisbon is generally safe, but pickpockets exist.
Be careful around Rossio, Restauradores, Chiado, Baixa, Tram 28 and crowded viewpoints.
Driving in Lisbon
I don’t recommend driving inside Lisbon unless you really need to.
Traffic, narrow streets and parking can be stressful. Street parking is usually paid during the day, often from 09:00 to 19:00, and is generally free on Sundays and public holidays, but always check the signs and parking meter because rules change by zone.
