The Aldeias do Xisto (Schist Villages) are a network of 27 villages spread across the mountains of central Portugal.
Created to preserve traditional architecture, local traditions and the natural landscape, the network covers 20 municipalities in the districts of Coimbra and Castelo Branco and is one of Portugal's best examples of sustainable rural tourism.
The villages offer visitors the chance to discover historic streets, hiking trails, river beaches, traditional gastronomy and one of the country's most authentic landscapes.
5 Schist Villages I recommned
📍 Piódão
Probably the most famous of them all. Its dark schist houses with white and blue windows climbing the mountainside make it one of Portugal's most iconic villages.
📍 Talasnal
Hidden in the Serra da Lousã, Talasnal is one of the most photographed villages in the network. Wander through its narrow streets and stop at one of the traditional restaurants serving regional dishes.
📍 Cerdeira
A beautifully restored village that has become a centre for arts and crafts. Throughout the year, visitors can take part in pottery, wood carving and other creative workshops.
📍 Janeiro de Cima
Located on the banks of the Zêzere River, this peaceful village is known for its traditional woven willow craftsmanship, riverside setting and nearby river beach.
📍 Casal de São Simão
One of the most picturesque villages in the network, surrounded by forested hills. Just a short walk away you'll find the beautiful Fragas de São Simão and its river beach, one of the highlights of the region.
