Pavilhão Chinês is one of Lisbon’s most unusual historic bars.
Spread across five rooms, its walls and shelves are filled with an extraordinary collection of objects from different periods: military helmets, toy soldiers, medals, old maps, war planes, trains, ceramic pieces, vintage posters, Action Men, Betty Boop figures and much more.
The official description compares it to the old European “cabinets of curiosities”, rooms where collectors gathered unusual objects from around the world. And that is probably the best way to describe the feeling of walking inside.
Pavilhão Chinês opened in 1986, but it preserved the memory of a previous business that had occupied the space since 1901. The collection and the concept were created by Luís Pinto Coelho, who was also connected to other classic Lisbon bars such as Foxtrot, Procópio and Paródia.
Today you can sit among all these objects, order a cocktail and even play snooker.
It is technically a bar, but walking through its rooms feels a little like visiting a private museum.
