The Algarve beyond the beaches: 5 places most visitors miss

The Algarve beyond the beaches: 5 places most visitors miss

When people think about the Algarve, they usually think about beaches, cliffs and summer holidays.

But the Algarve also has Roman ruins, prehistoric monuments, Islamic heritage, thermal waters and protected landscapes.

Here are 5 places that show a different side of the region:

1. Roman Ruins of Milreu
Close to Faro, in Estoi, this was once a Roman rural villa, inhabited from the 1st century onwards. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it became a more luxurious villa, and you can still see mosaics and marble remains today. It is one of the best places in the Algarve if you enjoy history without the crowds.

2. Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar
Near Portimão, this site takes you much further back in time. Around 5,000 years ago, an important prehistoric community lived here. Today, the monuments are classified as National Monuments. A great reminder that the Algarve’s history goes much deeper than castles and beach resorts.

3. Islamic Baths of Loulé
One of the most interesting cultural stops in the Algarve. These baths are connected to the Islamic period of the region and are now part of the Museu Municipal de Loulé. A very good stop if you want something historic, specific and less obvious.

4. Caldas de Monchique
A small thermal spot in the Serra de Monchique, surrounded by green hills and vegetation. It sits around 250 metres above sea level, in a quiet valley, and its waters were already appreciated by the Romans. It feels completely different from the beach side of the Algarve.

5. Rocha da Pena
A protected landscape between the Barrocal and the Algarve hills. It has limestone formations, caves, walking trails and wide views over the countryside. Perfect if you want nature, silence and a more rural side of the region.

The Algarve is not only a beach destination.

The coast is beautiful, but the region becomes much more interesting when you also explore its old ruins, inland landscapes, small historic sites and local food.

That is why I created my Algarve Digital Travel Guide.

It includes beaches, towns, day trips, food tips, practical advice and Google Maps lists, so you can plan the Algarve without wasting hours searching online.
