The historic Sintra Tram returned to the tracks in May 2026, after a temporary closure for maintenance.
It connects Sintra with Praia das Maçãs in a journey of around 45 minutes, travelling almost 11 km from the hills towards the Atlantic.
The line is more than 120 years old. The first section, between Sintra and Colares, opened in 1904, and the tram reached Praia das Maçãs the following year.
The old tram leaves from Vila Alda, in Estefânia, and slowly makes its way through the Sintra countryside and Colares before reaching the coast.
At one point, the line went even further. In 1930, it was extended to Azenhas do Mar, although that section closed in 1955.
🍎 Why is it called Praia das Maçãs?
The name means Apple Beach.
According to Visit Sintra, there were once many orchards along the Ribeira de Colares. Apples would fall into the water and be carried downstream until they reached the beach.
Praia das Maçãs later became one of Sintra's traditional summer destinations.
PS: The tram timetable can change and there are sometimes temporary interruptions for maintenance, so always check the official Sintra website before going. Tickets are bought inside the tram.
For me, this is a great option if you have more time in Sintra and want to see something beyond the palaces.
