Sintra looks like something out of a fairytale. Once the summer escape of kings and queens, it’s now one of the most visited places in Portugal. With palaces on the hills, secret gardens, and views of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s a place of history, beauty, and mystery.
What to see:
Palácio da Pena:The famous colorful palace at the top of the hill.
Quinta da Regaleira: With underground tunnels and the magical Initiation Well.
Palácio Nacional de Sintra:In the center of town, with its two big chimneys.
Castelo dos Mouros:An old castle with incredible views.
Must try:
Travesseiros de Sintra: soft, sweet puff pastries filled with almond cream.
Queijadas de Sintra: small cakes made with fresh cheese, sugar, and cinnamon.
You’ll find both at the famous Piriquita bakery.
Have more time? Go further:
Cabo da Roca: The westernmost point of Europe, with wild cliffs and ocean views.
Praia da Ursa: A hidden beach close to Cabo da Roca. It takes a small hike, but it’s worth it.
My tip:
Sintra is big, full of hills, and often confusing for first-timers. Most visitors only see a small part. That’s why I really recommend going with a local guide and driver. You’ll discover much more and enjoy your time fully.
