Serra da Estrela: Portugal’s Mountain Escape (3h from Lisbon)

In the centre of Portugal you’ll find Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. Think big views, glacial valleys, clear river beaches, strong cheeses, and small villages that feel far from the coast. Driving time from Lisbon is about 3 hours.

When to go
Winter (Dec–Feb): sometimes there’s snow; in good years the country’s only ski area opens for short periods. Always check conditions.
Spring/Summer: clear trails, mountain lakes, cool nights.
Autumn: quiet roads, golden colours, great food season.

What to see & do (short list)
Torre (1,993 m): highest point in mainland Portugal; drive-up summit with huge views.
Vale Glaciar do Zêzere: one of the best-preserved glacial valleys in Iberia, with scenic viewpoints above Manteigas.
Covão dos Conchos: the Instagram-famous “bell-mouth” spillway on an alpine lake (engineered in the 1950s) that diverts water to Lagoa Comprida. Hike in; bring boots.
Poço do Inferno: waterfall and emerald pool near Manteigas; short walk from the road.

River beaches:
Loriga (in a glacial valley): cold, crystal water and mountain scenery.
Vale do Rossim: one of Portugal’s highest river beaches; swim or rent a pedalo in summer.
Nossa Senhora da Boa Estrela: large rock-carved sanctuary from the 1940s on the road to Torre.

Villages worth a stop:
Sabugueiro (often called one of Portugal’s highest villages).
Linhares da Beira (castle and paragliding spot).
Belmonte (medieval castle and strong local traditions).
Burel Factory (Manteigas): working wool mill with guided visits, check times and book ahead.

What to taste
Queijo Serra da Estrela (PDO): raw ewe’s-milk cheese set with thistle rennet, young is creamy and oozy; aged is sliceable. Celorico da Beira is a classic place to try and buy.
Museu do Pão (Seia): bread museum with restaurant, a good stop in bad weather or with kids.

Quick tips
Roads are mountain roads: check weather, fuel up, and bring layers even in summer.
Winter operations (snow, lifts, some roads) are unpredictable, always verify on the day.
