The Ria Formosa is a protected lagoon system in the eastern Algarve, stretching for about 60 km, from the Ancão area to Manta Rota.
Instead of one continuous beach, this coast is made of barrier islands, sandbanks, salt marshes, canals and shallow lagoons. The landscape changes with the tides, so the same place can look completely different in the morning and in the afternoon.
It is one of the best areas in the Algarve for boat trips, calm water, long sandy beaches and nature.
Best places to visit in Ria Formosa
Ilha da Culatra
A small fishing island with no cars, sandy paths and a very local rhythm. Good for a simple beach day without big hotels around you.
Ilha do Farol
Part of the same barrier island as Culatra, but with its own feel. It has the lighthouse, a small village, beach restaurants and easy boat access from Faro or Olhão.
Ilha Deserta / Barreta
The quietest option. There is very little development and a long empty beach. Good if you want space, dunes and nature. Bring water and check boat times before going.
Ilha de Tavira
One of the easiest islands to visit, especially if you are staying around Tavira. The beach is long, sandy and good for families. In summer it has more infrastructure, but you can walk further to find quieter areas.
Cacela Velha / Praia da Fábrica
Not an island, but one of the most beautiful views over the Ria Formosa. At low tide, the sandbanks and shallow water create an incredible landscape.
Check the tide before going, because the experience changes a lot depending on the water level.
Practical tips for visiting Ria Formosa
Boats to the islands leave from Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Cabanas and Fuzeta, depending on where you want to go.
The water inside the lagoon is usually calmer and often feels warmer than the open Atlantic coast, especially in the shallow areas.
Always check ferry times, tides and return boats before you go.
Some of the best beaches in this part of the Algarve are not reached by car.
You need a boat, a bit of planning and time to slow down.
