PORTUGAL STILL HAS A FUNICULAR FROM 1882 THAT RUNS ON WATER

In Braga, northern Portugal, there's a funicular that has been running since 1882, using water and gravity instead of a motor. It's called the Elevador do Bom Jesus, and it's the oldest operating water-powered funicular in the world. It's also the first funicular built in the Iberian Peninsula.

There are two carriages connected by a cable, each with a water tank underneath. The carriage at the top is filled with water until it becomes heavier than the one below.Gravity does the rest. The heavier carriage goes down, pulling the lighter one up.At the bottom, the water is released, and the process starts again.

VISITING BOM JESUS DO MONTE

The funicular takes you to the beautiful Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.

The ride takes around 3 minutes and costs €2.50 one way or €4 return.

You can also use the famous staircase, with more than 500 steps, fountains and statues.
