In the mountains of northern Portugal, inside the Peneda Gerês National Park, you will find the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda.
It is located in Gavieira, in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, surrounded by mountains and dominated by the huge Fraga da Meadinha, a rock face around 300 metres high.
The devotion to Nossa Senhora da Peneda goes back to the Middle Ages, but the sanctuary we see today was built in the 19th century. no
One of its most impressive features is the long monumental staircase leading to the church. Along the way, there are 20 small chapels representing episodes from the life of Jesus.
The setting is what makes this place special. The church, the staircase and the huge granite mountain behind it all seem to be part of the same landscape.
And if you are travelling in northern Portugal soon, this is a particularly good time to visit. The traditional Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Peneda takes place from 31 August to 8 September, bringing pilgrims and visitors from Portugal and neighbouring Galicia.
