Palácio Fronteira: One of Lisbon’s Most Beautiful Palaces

Palácio Fronteira is one of the best places in Lisbon if you enjoy history, gardens and traditional Portuguese tiles.

It is not in the historic centre. It is in São Domingos de Benfica, so you need to plan the visit a little. But that is also part of the reason why it feels calmer than many famous sights in Lisbon.

The palace was built in the 17th century for Dom João Mascarenhas, the 1st Marquis of Fronteira. It started as a noble house outside the city, close to Monsanto, and later became more important after the 1755 earthquake.

What makes Palácio Fronteira special is the tilework.

In Portugal, these traditional tiles are called azulejos. At Palácio Fronteira, you can see them inside the palace, in the gardens, on terraces, around fountains and along the walls.

They show battles, hunting scenes, mythological figures, animals and daily life. It is one of the best places in Lisbon to understand how tiles were used not just as decoration, but also to tell stories.

A few practical tips:

Visits inside the palace are guided.

The gardens can usually be visited with the palace ticket, but always check the official schedule before going. It is not the kind of place where you arrive quickly between two stops. Give it time.

If you like tiles, gardens and quieter historic places, Palácio Fronteira is one of the most beautiful visits in Lisbon.
