Among all the palaces in Sintra, Monserrate is one of the most unique.
The palace we see today was built in the 19th century by Sir Francis Cook, a wealthy British merchant and art collector, who turned the estate into his summer residence.
Its architecture combines Gothic, Indian and Moorish influences, creating a style unlike any other palace in Portugal.
But Monserrate is much more than the palace itself.
Surrounding it is a large park covering more than 30 hectares, where plants from different parts of the world were carefully collected and planted. As you walk through the gardens, you'll find lakes, waterfalls, exotic trees, winding paths and viewpoints.
In 1995, Monserrate became part of the UNESCO Cultural Landscape of Sintra, together with other historic sites in the area.

The Palace
The central gallery, intricate stonework and detailed interiors make Monserrate one of the most impressive palaces in Sintra.
The Gardens
One of the highlights of any visit. The park includes sections dedicated to plants from Mexico, Japan and other regions of the world.
The Ruins and Paths
Several walking paths connect different areas of the estate, making it a great place to explore at a slower pace.
Many visitors focus on Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, but Monserrate is often quieter and less crowded. If you have time for more than one palace in Sintra, it is well worth the visit.
