On Madeira’s north coast, the village of Seixal has one of the most striking beaches on the island.
Praia do Seixal is known for its natural black sand, surrounded by steep green mountains that seem to fall directly into the Atlantic.
What many people do not know is that the beach itself is relatively new. According to Madeira’s official tourism board, this stretch of sand formed naturally only a few years ago, beside the small harbour of Seixal.
The contrast is what makes the place so special. You have dark volcanic sand, clear Atlantic water and some of the greenest mountain scenery on the island, all in the same view.
Unlike some of Madeira’s yellow-sand beaches, where sand was brought in from elsewhere, the black sand at Seixal is natural.
You can also rent kayaks here, and the beach is used for swimming, paddleboarding and bodyboarding.
If you are exploring the north coast, I would definitely include Seixal. Even if you do not spend the day at the beach, it is worth stopping simply for the landscape.
