If it’s your first time in Lisbon and you want to try some Portuguese food, here are 6 things you will find in many places around the city.
🥧 1. Pastel de Nata
In Lisbon, the usual debate is between the pastel de nata from Manteigaria and the Pastel de Belém.
But if you have time, stop at a neighbourhood pastelaria too. Portugal has many other pastries worth trying, and sometimes the best surprise comes from a small place you had not planned to visit.
🐟 2. Bacalhau à Brás
One of the most popular ways to eat bacalhau, made with shredded cod, onion, thin fried potatoes and eggs.
A good place to try it is Laurentina, O Rei do Bacalhau, a restaurant with several different bacalhau dishes on its menu.
🍗 3. Frango de Churrasco
Many visitors know it as piri-piri chicken, but in Portugal we normally call it frango de churrasco or frango assado.
Bonjardim is probably the best-known place among tourists, but I recommend A Valenciana, in Campolide. It is a traditional churrasqueira known for its charcoal-grilled chicken.
🥪 4. Bifana
A sandwich made with thin slices of pork, usually served with mustard or piri-piri sauce.
Try one at Parreirinha do Chile at Praça do Chile.
🍚 5. Arroz Doce
Arroz doce is a traditional rice pudding made with milk and usually finished with cinnamon.
You can find it in many Portuguese tascas. One I recommend is the arroz doce at O Bitoque, in Campo de Ourique.
🍒 6. Ginjinha
Ginjinha is a sweet cherry liqueur usually served in a small glass, with or without a cherry inside.
Try it at A Ginjinha, in Largo de São Domingos, just beside Rossio. The shop is tiny, so most people drink it outside in the square.
