The palace you see today was completed in 1863 after Sir Francis Cook, a British merchant and art collector, acquired the property and transformed it into one of Portugal's finest examples of Romantic architecture.
Its design blends Gothic, Moorish and Indian influences, creating a palace unlike any other in Portugal. From the intricate arches to the colourful details and impressive central dome, every room feels unique.
The gardens are just as remarkable.
Spread across the hillside, they are home to more than 3,000 plant species from around the world. Thanks to Sintra's unique microclimate, you can find plants from Australia, Japan, Mexico, the Himalayas and many other regions, all within the same botanical park.
Together with the rest of Sintra's cultural landscape, Monserrate Palace is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
