Marvão: A Medieval Village Above the Clouds
In Alto Alentejo, close to the Spanish border, you’ll find Marvão, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Portugal.
The village sits on the highest point of the Serra de São Mamede, above 800 metres, surrounded by old walls and wide views over the Alentejo and Spain.
Because of its location, Marvão was an important defensive place for centuries. Visit Portugal describes it as one of the strongest positions in the kingdom, especially from the Christian conquest in 1160 until the wars with Spain in the 17th century.
What to see in Marvão
Castelo de Marvão
Walk up to the castle for the best views. From the top, you can see the Alentejo plains, Castelo de Vide, and across the border into Spain.
Historic streets
Marvão is full of narrow streets, white houses, Gothic windows, iron balconies and quiet corners. It really feels like a village where time moves slowly.
Igreja de Santa Maria and Municipal Museum
The old church of Santa Maria now houses the Municipal Museum, where you can learn more about the history of the village.
The walls
Walking along the walls is probably the best thing to do here. The views are huge and the silence makes the place even more special.
Food and atmosphere
Marvão is also a good place to enjoy Alentejo food: migas, açorda, porco preto, lamb dishes and local wine.
One place worth checking is Fago Restaurante, known for Alentejo food with a more modern touch.
