Cacilhas is one of the easiest places to visit from Lisbon, but many visitors never cross the river.
The ferry leaves from Cais do Sodré and takes around 10 minutes. A single journey costs €2, or €1.60 with zapping. You may also need a reusable Navegante card, which costs €0.50.
I often recommend Cacilhas for a relaxed walk, lunch by the river and a different view of Lisbon. The ferry journey is already part of the experience, especially when you look back towards the city, the castle and the hills.
Here are a few places worth seeing:
Fragata D. Fernando II e Glória
This 19th-century frigate was the last Portuguese Navy ship to sail entirely under sail and the last Portuguese vessel to complete the historic India Route.
Today, it is a museum ship that you can visit near the ferry terminal.
Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso
Located on Rua Cândido dos Reis, close to the ferry terminal, this church was built after the 1755 earthquake.
Inside, you can see 18th-century blue and white tiles showing scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary.
Rua Cândido dos Reis
This is one of the main streets in Cacilhas, with Portuguese restaurants, seafood places and cafés.
For something simple and local, I normally recommend Cova Funda for grilled fish.
Cais do Ginjal
Walk beside the river, past the old industrial buildings, and enjoy one of the best views of Lisbon from the opposite bank.
The route continues towards Jardim do Rio, a peaceful place to sit on the grass and relax beside the Tagus.
Ponto Final
Probably the best-known restaurant in the area, mainly because of its tables directly beside the river and the view towards Lisbon.
It is usually very popular, so booking ahead is a good idea.
Jardim do Rio and Boca do Vento Elevator
From Jardim do Rio, you can take the glass Boca do Vento Elevator up to the historic centre of Almada.
The elevator connects Jardim do Rio with the upper part of Almada, covering a height difference of around 50 metres and offering wide views over the Tagus and Lisbon.
Cacilhas is a good plan for a walk, lunch and a different perspective of Lisbon. Around three hours is enough for most people, although you can easily stay longer for a relaxed meal beside the water.
