Lisbon’s Biggest Celebration: Festas de Santo António

Every June, Lisbon celebrates its patron saint, Santo António, with street parties across the city. The main night is June 12, leading into June 13, the official feast day.

This is Lisbon’s biggest annual event. Throughout the month, streets are decorated, and each neighbourhood hosts its own arraial with music, grilled sardines, dancing, and the smell of manjericão (basil).

One of the highlights is the "Marchas Populares", a parade on Avenida da Liberdade where neighbourhoods compete with colourful costumes, music, and choreography.

There’s also the Casamentos de Santo António, a group wedding ceremony for local couples, honouring the saint known for bringing people together.

Where to Go for the Best Arraiais (Street Parties):

Alfama: probably the most traditional party

Graça & Vila Berta: My favourite

Bica: A favourite for the younger crowd
