São Jorge Castle is one of Portugal's most visited monuments, but I think the experience doesn't quite justify its price.
An adult ticket now costs €17. Until July 2025, Lisbon residents could visit for free, but that benefit was suspended following a court decision.
I'm not questioning the historical importance of the castle. Its origins go back to the 11th century, and it played an important role in Lisbon's history.
However, something many visitors might not know is that the castle was heavily reconstructed between 1938 and 1940, after centuries of changes and damage, including the 1755 earthquake. Much of its medieval appearance today is the result of that restoration.
So, what do you actually get for €17?
You can walk along the walls and towers, explore the gardens and enjoy some of the best views of Lisbon. There are also guided tours and a Camera Obscura experience included in the ticket.
But personally, I feel the castle could offer much more.
The museum is currently closed for improvements, and I think a monument of this importance could do a better job of bringing its history to life, with more interactive exhibitions, information and activities for visitors.
Lisbon already has several fantastic viewpoints that you can enjoy for free. At €17 per person, or €34 for a couple, I think it's reasonable to expect more than beautiful views and a walk along the walls.
The castle itself is an important part of Lisbon's history. My criticism is about the visitor experience and whether it offers good value for money.
I'm curious what others think. Have you visited São Jorge Castle recently? Did you feel it was worth the €17?
