HE PORTUGUESE CHRISTMAS TRADITION THAT BRINGS A WHOLE VILLAGE TOGETHER

In many Portuguese villages, Christmas Eve doesn't end after the family dinner. There's an old tradition called *Madeiro de Natal*, where the local community gathers around a large bonfire.

The tradition is particularly common in inland Portugal. During December, locals collect wood and build a large pile, usually near the village church. On Christmas Eve, the fire is lit and people gather to celebrate together.

I have some wonderful childhood memories of this tradition.

In Bairro, a small village near Ourém where my maternal grandparents lived, the Madeiro is still part of Christmas.

I remember going out during December with a cart to collect firewood. Some villagers would donate wood, and everyone helped prepare the bonfire.

On December 24, after Christmas dinner with our families, we would go from door to door collecting drinks to share. Then, at midnight, we would light the bonfire.

The fire would burn throughout the night, with neighbours, friends and families gathering around it, talking, sharing drinks and enjoying each other's company.

It's one of those childhood memories that has stayed with me, and I hope traditions like this continue for many generations.

Does your village have a Madeiro de Natal? I'd love to hear about other Portuguese Christmas traditions.
