On top of one of Lisbon’s hills lies Graça, one of the city’s oldest and most authentic neighborhoods. It grew outside the old city walls in the Middle Ages and has kept its local spirit ever since.
Graça is known for its history, its viewpoints with some of the best views in Lisbon, and its mix of daily life with local cafés, markets, and restaurants. From the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, the highest viewpoint in Lisbon, to the Miradouro da Graça, next to the church and the Convento da Graça (founded in the 13th century), the panoramas here are unforgettable.
Around the neighborhood you’ll find places that show Lisbon’s character. Vila Berta, a small street from 1902, still has a strong community vibe and is beautifully decorated during the June festivals. Travessa do Monte is another highlight, full of small restaurants and bars, perfect for a casual meal or a drink.
Graça is also a neighborhood to eat well. Penalva da Graça is one of my favourite spots for seafood in Lisbon, with fresh dishes and fair prices. For classic Portuguese food, Estrela de Ouro is always a safe choice. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, stop by Saga, a traditional pastry shop, perfect for breakfast or an afternoon coffee. And for drinks, O Botequim is a historic bar where locals gather for a quiet and authentic atmosphere.
For me, Graça is the perfect balance: a neighborhood that keeps its Portuguese identity while the city changes around it. That’s why it will always be my favorite place in Lisbon.
