Francesinha is one of Porto’s most famous dishes.
The most accepted story says it was created in the early 1950s by Daniel David da Silva, a Portuguese emigrant who returned from France and was inspired by the croque-monsieur.
But the Porto version is much heavier.
It is made with layers of bread, ham, sausage, steak or roast meat, covered with melted cheese and a rich, spicy sauce.
The sauce is the secret.
It usually includes tomato, beer, meat stock and spices, but every restaurant has its own version. Some are stronger, some are sweeter, and locals will always debate which one is the best.
One tip: francesinha is not a snack.
It is a full meal, usually served with fries and best enjoyed with a cold beer.
Where to Try It in Porto
Café Santiago
Probably the most famous francesinha in Porto. Very popular, often busy, and a classic for first-time visitors.
Brasão Cervejaria
A more modern and polished option, with several locations in Porto. Very popular and usually a safe choice.
Mirandas Kaffe
A good local option away from the most obvious tourist spots. Known for its francesinha and a more neighbourhood feel.
