Dornes: The Templar Village by the River

Dornes: The Templar Village by the River

About 1h45 by car from Lisbon, not far from Tomar, lies Dornes, a medieval village surrounded by the waters of the Zêzere River. Its story is deeply tied to the Knights Templar.

The village is famous for its pentagonal Templar tower, built in the 12th century by Gualdim Pais, master of the Templars in Portugal, who also founded Tomar. Historians believe this unusual five-sided shape was linked to Templar symbolism and strategic defense. Dornes became part of the frontier line that defended Christian Portugal during the Reconquista.
In later centuries, Dornes grew as a place of devotion. The Church of Nossa Senhora do Pranto was ordered by Queen Santa Isabel in the 13th century and became an important pilgrimage site.
Today, Dornes is officially listed as one of the “Aldeias Ribeirinhas de Portugal” (Riverside Villages). It’s a mix of history, legend, and natural beauty, peaceful streets, whitewashed houses, and stunning views over the Zêzere River.
