The Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of Portugal's most beautiful natural areas.
Stretching for around 60 km, from Praia do Ancão to Manta Rota, it is made up of barrier islands, sandbanks, salt marshes, lagoons and winding channels that constantly change with the tides.
It's one of the best places in the Algarve for boat trips, long sandy beaches, birdwatching and peaceful landscapes.
🏝️ Places Worth Visiting
Ilha da Culatra
A traditional fishing island with no cars, sandy streets and a relaxed atmosphere. A great place to experience a quieter side of the Algarve.
Ilha do Farol
Located on the same barrier island as Culatra, Farol has its own small village, lighthouse, restaurants and beautiful beaches. It's easily reached by boat from Faro or Olhão.
Ilha Deserta (Ilha da Barreta)
The quietest of the islands. Almost untouched, with long sandy beaches, dunes and very little development. Don't forget to bring water and check the ferry timetable before you go.
Ilha de Tavira
One of the easiest islands to visit. It offers a long sandy beach, calm waters and good facilities, making it a great choice for families.
Cacela Velha & Praia da Fábrica
Not an island, but one of the most beautiful viewpoints over the Ria Formosa. At low tide, the sandbanks create one of the Algarve's most spectacular landscapes.
A Few Practical Tips
Boats leave from Faro, Olhão, Fuseta, Tavira and Cabanas de Tavira, depending on which island you want to visit.
The water around the islands is usually calmer and often feels warmer than many beaches on the open Atlantic coast.
Always check ferry schedules and tide times before you travel.
Some of the Algarve's best beaches can't be reached by car. Getting there is part of the experience.
