Just over 2 hours from Lisbon, in the Alentejo, you’ll find one of the darkest skies in Europe.
There are almost no streetlights, and on a clear night you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
This is Dark Sky Alqueva, and it was the first place in the world to be certified as a Starlight Tourism Destination (2011).
The area is very large (around 9,700 km²), covering parts of Portugal and Spain.
There are about 286 clear nights per year, more than most places in Europe.
Good spots for stargazing
Observatório do Lago Alqueva
Guided sessions with telescopes (around 75 minutes). You should book before.
Castelo de Monsaraz
Wide views over the lake. After 11pm, lights in the village are reduced.
Cromeleque do Xerez
Very old stone circle (about 5,000 years). Good spot for night photos.
Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz
Flat area near the water, easy to access, very dark.
Castelo de Mourão
Less people than Monsaraz, good if you want a quieter place.
Tip: go during a new moon and arrive 20–30 minutes before it gets dark, so your eyes adjust properly.
