Founded in 1160 by the Knights Templar, the Castle and Convento de Cristo dominate the city of Tomar from the top of the hill.
After the Templars were dissolved in the 14th century, the complex became the headquarters of the Order of Christ, which would later have an important connection with Portugal's maritime expansion. Today, the monument brings together around seven centuries of Portuguese history and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
One of the most impressive parts is the Charola, the original 12th century Templar oratory. Its circular design was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
Also look for the famous Manueline Window of the Chapter House, built between 1510 and 1513. It is full of maritime symbols and is one of the best known examples of Manueline architecture in Portugal.
There are several cloisters, long corridors, the old castle walls and very different architectural styles added over centuries.
🚆 Getting there from Lisbon
There are direct regional trains from Lisboa Santa Apolónia to Tomar, with many journeys taking around 2 hours.
If you're travelling by car, Tomar is around 140 km from Lisbon.
In my opinion, Tomar is one of the best day trips you can take from Lisbon. Besides the Convento de Cristo, the city has a beautiful historic centre, the old synagogue, Mata dos Sete Montes and several other places connected to the history of the Templars.
