CONFEITARIA NACIONAL: LISBON’S OLDEST PASTRY SHOP, OPEN SINCE 1829

In Praça da Figueira, just a short walk from Rossio, Confeitaria Nacional has been part of Lisbon for almost two centuries.
Founded in 1829 by Balthazar Roiz Castanheiro, it is the oldest pastry shop in Lisbon still in operation.

There’s a royal connection too. In 1873, Confeitaria Nacional became an official supplier to the Portuguese Royal Household.

It also helped introduce Bolo Rei to Portugal after the founder’s son brought the recipe from France. This ring-shaped cake, made with fruit and nuts, is now a Portuguese Christmas tradition.
