It opened in 1829, and it’s still run by the same family today. For many locals it’s a symbol of Lisbon’s tradition.
When you walk in, you’ll notice the wooden counters, mirrors, and marble tables that keep the old character alive. Everything smells like butter, sugar, and coffee!
The house speciality is the Bolo-Rei (King Cake). The founder, Baltazar Roiz Castanheiro, brought the recipe from France in the 1800s, and it quickly became Portugal’s favorite Christmas cake. Since then, they’ve made it every year following the same recipe.
Of course, you’ll also find pastéis de nata, puff pastries, and other classics, all baked fresh every day. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, order a coffee, and enjoy a piece of Lisbon’s history.
