Carvoeiro is in Lagoa, in the central Algarve, between Albufeira and Lagos.
It grew from a small fishing village around a sheltered beach.
That layout is still clear today: a compact centre, low white houses and everything within short walking distance.
But the main reason to come here is not the town itself, it’s the coastline around it.
This stretch of the Algarve has some of the most eroded limestone cliffs in the region, with caves, arches and deep inlets formed by the sea over time.
What to do
Walk the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
– ~6 km one way (Praia da Marinha → Praia de Vale Centeanes)
– ~12 km return
– 2–3 hours (one way)
A cliff-top path with open sea views throughout. You can start at either end and walk only part of it.
Algar Seco
Rock formations and small caves just outside the centre. Easy access on foot. Several viewpoints along the cliffs.
Praia do Carvoeiro
Central beach, set between cliffs. Walkable from anywhere in town.
Praia da Marinha
Known for its rock formations and clear water. Often listed among the most scenic beaches in Europe.
Beyond Carvoeiro
Ferragudo
Across the Arade River. Small village, quieter atmosphere and good spots for a relaxed meal.
Lagos
Larger town with more beaches, restaurants and a historic centre.
Benagil
Short drive from Carvoeiro. Coastal views and access points above the cave area.
