BEYOND SINTRA'S PALACES: A SANCTUARY PERCHED ON GIANT ROCKS

BEYOND SINTRA'S PALACES: A SANCTUARY PERCHED ON GIANT ROCKS

At 488 metres above sea level, surrounded by enormous granite rocks and forest, stands one of the most unusual places in Sintra: the Santuário da Peninha.
The site has a long religious history. According to a local legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to a young shepherdess here, leading to the construction of a chapel in the 17th century.
Next to it stands a small palace commissioned in 1918 by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, the same man behind the famous Quinta da Regaleira.

But one of the best reasons to visit is the view. On clear days, you can see Cabo da Roca, Cascais, the Atlantic coast and even the Arrábida mountains.
You might also spot Garrano horses grazing nearby. These native Portuguese horses were introduced to the area in 2021 to help control vegetation and reduce wildfire risks.
