About 10 km off the coast of Peniche, the Berlengas feel much further away from Lisbon than they really are.
The archipelago is a protected nature reserve and has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2011. Only Berlenga Grande can be visited, and boats leave from Peniche, with the crossing taking around 30 minutes depending on the boat and sea conditions.
Once you are there you can swim at the small Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro, walk the island trails and enjoy some incredible Atlantic views and visit the Forte de São João Baptista, probably the most iconic spot on the island
The fort was built between 1651 and 1656 to help protect the island from enemy occupation. Its location, connected to the rocks by a narrow stone bridge, makes it one of the most impressive fortifications in Portugal.
You can also take small boat trips around the island to see the cliffs, caves and clear water from another perspective.
One important thing to know before going: access to Berlenga Grande is controlled. Only 550 people can be on the island at the same time and visitors need a BerlengasPass, so in summer I strongly recommend planning ahead.
