BASÍLICA DA ESTRELA AND ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEWS IN LISBON

BASÍLICA DA ESTRELA AND ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEWS IN LISBON

Built in the late 18th century, Basílica da Estrela is one of Lisbon's most beautiful churches.
It was commissioned by Queen Maria I, who had promised to build a church if she gave birth to a son.
The basilica is known for its impressive white dome, beautiful marble interior and a nativity scene created by Machado de Castro, with more than 500 figures made from cork and terracotta.

But there's another reason I recommend visiting.

You can actually climb to the rooftop and enjoy one of the most beautiful views over Lisbon!
From the terrace, you can walk around the enormous dome and enjoy views of the city's rooftops, the Tagus River and Jardim da Estrela.
There's a small entrance fee for the rooftop, but visiting the church itself is free.

And just across the street is Jardim da Estrela, one of my favourite gardens in Lisbon.
Opened in 1852, it has beautiful old trees, small ponds, a historic iron bandstand and plenty of space to sit and relax.

You can easily visit both places together, and the famous Tram 28 stops right outside.
