Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon and one of the few areas that survived the great earthquake of 1755 almost intact. Its maze of narrow streets, small alleys, and colourful houses still keeps the atmosphere of old Lisbon.
The name Alfama comes from the Arabic word al-ḥamma, meaning “hot springs.” During the Moorish occupation, this was the heart of the city, a neighbourhood shaped by Islamic influence and centuries of history. After the Christian reconquest, it became home to fishermen and working families, keeping a strong sense of community that remains today.
Alfama became one of the best places in Lisbon to experience live Fado.
Things I recommend in Alfama
It’s impossible to share all my recommendations in Alfama, but here are 5 special places I really like:
O Cartaxeiro (restaurant)
Alfama has fewer and fewer authentic restaurants, but this one has survived. It is only open for lunch and is one of my favourite places to eat real Portuguese food in Alfama.
O Sardinha (restaurant)
Another true tasca that is still alive in Lisbon.Simple food, honest flavours, and very local.
Tejo Bar (bar)
Alfama is often linked to fado, but I recommend Tejo Bar. It’s a tiny bar with live music from around the world and a very special atmosphere.
Dolce Alfama (pastry shop)
A traditional local pastry shop, perfect for a coffee and something sweet.
Ulisses (cocktail bar)
A bar with only 3 square metres. It works only by reservation and offers a truly unique cocktail experience.
