Alfama: The Most Historic Neighbourhood in Lisbon
Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon and one of the few areas that survived the great earthquake of 1755 almost intact. Its maze of narrow streets, small alleys, and colourful houses still keeps the atmosphere of old Lisbon.
The name Alfama comes from the Arabic word al-ḥamma, meaning “hot springs.” During the Moorish occupation, this was the heart of the city, a neighbourhood shaped by Islamic influence and centuries of history. After the Christian reconquest became home to fishermen and working families, keeping a strong sense of community that remains today.
Alfama became one of the best places in Lisbon to experience live Fado in small, traditional restaurants where songs still echo through the narrow streets at night.
