I discovered Adega de Sines during one of my bicycle trips along the Alentejo coast.I stopped in Sines for lunch and found a place that has since become one of my favourite tascas in Portugal.
Adega de Sines is a family-run restaurant right in front of Sines Castle and unlike some other tascas, where the service can sometimes feel a little grumpy, I have always found the atmosphere here friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is best known locally for its grilled chicken but my advice is to also look at the dishes of the day.The menu changes depending on what they are cooking. And if you hear that there is favas com entrecosto, that would probably be my choice.
Before becoming a restaurant, Adega de Sines was a traditional wine cellar and taberna. Wine was served directly from barrels behind the counter, and many of the regular customers were local fishermen.
They would also bring fish and seafood that ended up becoming part of the petiscos served there.
The Municipal Museum of Sines has documented the history of the space, including its old marble counter and Art Deco façade. The building has been part of the local food and drinking culture for generations.
📍 Adega de Sines
Rua Gago Coutinho 40, Sines
It currently opens for lunch from Monday to Saturday, usually from 12:00 to 15:00.
If you are driving from Lisbon towards the Algarve, I think one of the best things you can do is avoid rushing directly south.
Stop somewhere along the Alentejo coast, find a good tasca and have a proper lunch.
In my opinion, the Alentejo is one of the best regions in Portugal for food.
