Lisbon is one of Europe's oldest cities, so it's not unusual to find businesses that have been open for more than 100 years.
Stepping inside some of these shops is like stepping into another era. Whether you're looking for handmade candles, leather gloves, Portuguese wine or traditional delicacies, these places are part of Lisbon's history and well worth a visit.
Here are 8 of my favourites:
🕯️ 1. Caza das Vellas Loreto (1789)
One of the oldest candle shops in the world still operating in the same location. Handmade candles have been produced here for more than two centuries.
📚 2. Livraria Bertrand (1732)
Recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest bookshop still in operation. If you enjoy books, this is a must-visit in Chiado.
🧤 3. Luvaria Ulisses (1925)
A tiny shop where only one customer can enter at a time. Handmade leather gloves are still crafted using traditional techniques.
🎩 4. Chapelaria Azevedo Rua (1886)
Lisbon's oldest hat shop, still run by the same family and offering classic hats that have barely changed over the decades.
🐟 5. Conserveira de Lisboa (1930)
One of the city's most iconic shops for Portuguese canned fish. The original wooden shelves, vintage packaging and traditional atmosphere remain almost unchanged.
🍷 6. Garrafeira Nacional (1927)
One of the best places in Lisbon to discover Portuguese wines, Port wine and Madeira, from affordable bottles to rare vintages.
💍 7. Joalharia Ferreira Marques (1926)
An elegant Art Deco jewellery shop that has served generations of Lisbon families. James Bond fans may recognise it from On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
🧀 8. Manteigaria Silva (1890)
A paradise for food lovers, selling Portuguese cheeses, cured meats, olive oil, canned fish and many other traditional products.
These shops are much more than places to buy something.
They help preserve Lisbon's identity and remind us that, even in a city that has changed so much over the centuries, some traditions are still alive.
