7 Questions Americans Often Ask About Lisbon
Sometimes, when you live in a city, you forget what first-time visitors really want to know.
I used Answer the Public to check what people in the US actually search on Google about Lisbon and here are 7 of the most common (and sometimes surprising) ones
Can you drink the tap water in Lisbon?
Yes! Lisbon’s tap water is safe to drink everywhere. Some locals still prefer bottled water for taste, but quality-wise, it’s completely fine.
How many days do you need in Lisbon?
Ideally, 3 to 4 days, enough to explore the main districts (Alfama, Baixa, Chiado, Belém) and still have time for a day trip to Sintra or Cascais.
Can you pay with card everywhere?
Most places accept cards, but small cafés, local tascas, and street markets often only take cash. Always keep €20–30 with you, just in case.
Is Lisbon safe at night?
Yes, Lisbon is generally very safe. Petty theft (pickpockets) can happen in crowded tourist areas like Baixa or Tram 28, so stay alert, but violent crime is extremely rare.
How hilly is Lisbon, really?
Very! Lisbon was built on seven hills, so expect steep streets and lots of steps. Wear good shoes, the views make the effort worth it.
Can you swim in Lisbon?
Not exactly in the city, but you’re 30–40 minutes away from great beaches like Carcavelos, Guincho, or Costa da Caparica. Easy to reach by train or car.
What food should I try first?
Start with a pastel de nata, of course, but don’t stop there. Try bifana (pork sandwich), bacalhau à Brás, sardines, and a glass of ginjinha.
