Tram 28 is one of Lisbon’s best-known experiences, but I wouldn’t spend a large part of my day waiting for it.
Lisbon has other trams, trains and ferries where the journey can be part of the visit. Here are six options I recommend.
1. TRAM 24E: CHIADO TO CAMPOLIDE
Starting at Praça Luís de Camões, this traditional tram passes through Príncipe Real, Rato and Amoreiras before reaching Campolide.
It’s a good option for exploring a different side of central Lisbon. You can get off at Príncipe Real for a walk or stop near Jardim das Amoreiras.
2. TRAM 25E: SANTOS, LAPA AND ESTRELA
This tram connects the centre with Campo de Ourique, passing through Santos, Lapa and Estrela.
Choose it if you want a traditional tram journey through residential neighbourhoods. You can stop at the Basílica da Estrela and explore the garden opposite.
3. FERRY: CAIS DO SODRÉ TO CACILHAS
The crossing takes around 10 minutes and gives you a different view of Lisbon from the Tagus.
Once in Cacilhas, stop for lunch or continue exploring Almada. The return journey is another chance to enjoy the city from the water.
4. TRAIN: CAIS DO SODRÉ TO CASCAIS
This railway follows the river and then the coast towards Cascais.
Sit on the left when leaving Lisbon for the water views. You can stop at Belém, Carcavelos or Estoril, or continue to Cascais for a day trip. Check which stations your chosen train serves.
5. FERTAGUS TRAIN ACROSS THE 25 DE ABRIL BRIDGE
You can cross Lisbon’s famous suspension bridge by train.
Take a Fertagus service from Entrecampos, Sete Rios or Campolide to Pragal. The railway runs beneath the road deck, giving you views over the Tagus through the bridge’s steel structure.
6. TRAM 18E: CAIS DO SODRÉ TO AJUDA
This route passes through Santos and Alcântara before climbing towards Ajuda.
Get off at the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda stop to explore the area. The Ajuda Botanical Garden is also nearby.
Check current timetables and service changes before travelling. These are everyday public transport services, so avoid busy commuting hours when possible.
