Portugal is famous for its coastline, but some of the country's most beautiful swimming spots are actually inland.
River beaches are a great way to discover a different side of Portugal. Many are surrounded by forests, mountains and hiking trails, making them the perfect place to cool off during the summer.
Here are five that I think are worth visiting:
Foz d'Égua (Arganil)
One of the most beautiful river beaches in Portugal. Stone bridges, traditional schist houses and crystal-clear water make this one of the country's most photographed river beaches.
Lapa dos Dinheiros (Seia, Serra da Estrela)
A small river beach surrounded by granite rocks and lush vegetation, hidden in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. A great stop if you're exploring Portugal's highest mountain range.
Fragas de São Simão (Figueiró dos Vinhos)
Surrounded by impressive rock formations and forest, this river beach is also close to one of the region's most scenic hiking trails.
Praia Fluvial do Alqueirão (Valdosende, Terras de Bouro, Peneda-Gerês National Park)
Located in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, this peaceful river beach is surrounded by nature and is a great place to relax after exploring the region.
Praia Fluvial de Loriga (Loriga, Serra da Estrela)
Often called Portugal's only glacial river beach, Loriga is surrounded by granite mountains and crystal-clear water. It's one of the most unique places to swim in the country.
