One of the best parts of travelling through the Algarve is the food.
Of course, there are many good restaurants in the region, but these are five places I would personally recommend if you want something more traditional and local.
A FORJA, LAGOS
A family-run restaurant in the historic centre of Lagos.
This is a good place for fresh fish and simple Portuguese food. The menu often depends on what is available that day, and portions are generous.
NUNES, GUIA
If you want to try Frango da Guia, this is the place I would choose over some of the more famous names.
Nunes is a small local restaurant in Guia, known for chicken grilled over charcoal in the traditional style.
CASA SETE ESTRELAS, OLHÃO
A small traditional taberna in the centre of Olhão.
The focus here is on local ingredients, simple Algarve cooking and dishes connected to the sea. It is the kind of place I like because it still feels very local.
O ESTÁDIO, ALBUFEIRA
Forget the tourist restaurants near the beach.
O Estádio is beside the municipal stadium and is known mainly for fresh grilled fish. It is simple, good value and popular with locals, especially at lunch.
O PRIMO DOS CARACÓIS, MONCARAPACHO / OLHÃO
Despite the name, there is much more than snails here.
You can find clams, prawns, fish, seafood and traditional petiscos. It is right by the N125 and has that very typical roadside restaurant atmosphere that you still find in parts of the Algarve.
If you are driving around the region, I think stopping at a good local restaurant is as much part of the trip as visiting the beaches and towns.
