5 places to see beautiful tiles in Lisbon

Lisbon is full of tiles, but some places really stand out.

Start with the façade on Rua da Trindade 28–34, also known as Casa do Ferreira das Tabuletas. It was built in 1865 and the whole front feels almost theatrical, with painted figures and fake architectural details in tile.

Another one is the old Viúva Lamego factory, in Intendente. The building was built between 1849 and 1865, and its façade is one of the best examples of tiles being used almost like advertising.

For something more elegant, visit Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira. It is a bit outside the centre, but the gardens have some of the most beautiful tile panels in Lisbon.

Then go to Avenida Infante Santo, in Lapa, to see “O Mar”, a tile panel by Maria Keil from 1958. It is a good example of how Lisbon used tiles in modern public art too.

And finally, just walk around Madragoa. It is not one single monument, but a neighbourhood where you still find tiles on normal buildings, old façades and quiet streets.
