Lisbon is one of Europe's most popular destinations, but I often see visitors making the same mistakes.
Here are five things I would avoid.
1. Eating in Tourist Areas
Food is an important part of Portuguese culture, but eating on streets like Rua Augusta is often a mistake.
Many restaurants there are overpriced and aimed at tourists.
A simple rule: if someone is standing outside trying to convince you to come in, the food is probably not great.
2. Spending Too Much Time in Lines
Don't spend 90 minutes waiting for a bifana, Santa Justa Lift or Tram 28.
There are often better alternatives.
For example, instead of joining the long queue in the city centre, you can catch Tram 28 at Estrela.
Don't let your trip be controlled by TikTok trends. Sometimes the best experiences are the ones locals recommend.
3. Choosing the Wrong Area to Stay
Location matters a lot in Lisbon.
The city is built on hills, and some visitors end up staying far from metro stations or in areas that require a lot of uphill walking every day.
A good location can save you time, money and energy.
4. Choosing the Wrong Tour
Lisbon is a city with a lot of history, and I believe understanding some of that history will have a big impact on what you see and how you experience the city but not every guide tells it correctly.
Be careful with unofficial tours and some tuk-tuk drivers who often mix facts with stories.
If history interests you, choose a certified guide.
5. Skipping the Day Trips
Some of Portugal's best places are just outside Lisbon.
If you have the time, visit Sintra, Cascais , Évora or Tomar.
For many travellers, these places end up being the highlight of the trip.
