Here are five day trips I always recommend.
Sintra
Palaces, gardens and forested hills make Sintra one of Portugal's most magical places.
Don't miss Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira and the Moorish Castle.
Before leaving, stop at Casa Piriquita, where the famous Travesseiros de Sintra have been made since the 19th century.
Cascais
Once a small fishing village, Cascais became the summer destination of the Portuguese royal family in the late 19th century.
Walk along the coast, visit Boca do Inferno, relax on one of the beaches and enjoy lunch by the sea.
Óbidos
One of the best preserved medieval villages in Portugal.
Walk along the castle walls, explore the narrow streets and try a Ginjinha served in a chocolate cup.
Tomar
Home to the impressive Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Knights Templar.
Tomar is one of the best places in Portugal if you enjoy history, but it is also a relaxed town with gardens, cafés and the beautiful Nabão River.
Évora
Évora is one of Portugal's most beautiful historic cities and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.
Visit the Roman Temple, the Cathedral, the Chapel of Bones, and simply enjoy walking through its white streets full of history.
